This program is focused on superintendent and central office administrative certification. Persons selected for the cohort would be preparing for a central office position such as associate superintendent or superintendent. Admissions are accepted online through the Graduate School.

Admission Criteria

  • Master's degree in school administration from an accredited college or university with 3.0 GPA 
  • GRE or MAT scores
  • Approval of the admissions committee.
  • Current principal licensure (NC licensure code 12 or its equivalent from another state). Priority will be give to practicing principals and assistant/associate principal whose career goal is to be a superintendent. This EdS degree leads to NC licensure as a superintendent.

Educational Administration Admission to Candidacy (428A)

Objectives

  • To provide an opportunity to apply essential human skills for finding and solving system problems and concerns.
  • To introduce policy issues and the political implications related to policy implementation.
  • To elevate the application of appropriate technical knowledge (school plant, planning, school finance) in order to develop a broader perspective of educational problems and needs.
  • To confront the process of resource allocation as it relates to the professional settings in school systems.
  • To encourage building a relationship between various areas of specialization to the needs of school administration.

Curriculum Standards

During the first 12 hours of students' coursework, the School Administration faculty has a chance to assess the quality of students' academic work and other relevant factors leading to the endorsement of each student for certification as a school administrator. The faculty is also able to get a sense of the qualifications the students will bring to the field in general and the graduate program in particular. The professors then make a collective, professional judgment as to whether the students meet the criteria for Admission to Candidacy. An affirmative decision means the faculty believes the student is capable of completing the degree and making important contributions to school administration. Students who are not admitted to Candidacy cannot register for further coursework leading to a graduate degree, or add-on certificate in School Administration Program options. Prior to graduation, the student must successfully complete a comprehensive examination.

Faculty will consider each candidate's overall performance in classes, including interactions with other students and faculty in making a decision in relation to the criteria as described above. If the application is not approved, the student will be informed in writing by the Chair of the Department of Leadership and Educational Studies.

The student may appeal the decision within 14 work days from the date of the letter from the Department Chair. The written appeal must be directed to the Chair, describe the basis of the appeal, and provide additional information if appropriate. The appeal will be reviewed by the Chair in consultation with the School Administration faculty. If the appeal is denied, the student may then appeal to the Appeals Committee as set forth in the current Graduate Bulletin.

For those interested in pursuing the EDD program, ASU currently accepts 18 hours of the EdS degree towards doctoral hours, 4 courses (12 semester hours) applied as electives and 2 (6 semester hours) of internship. Other courses may be considered upon acceptance to the doctoral program, which is limited in cohort size to 12 students. More information can be found on the Doctoral Program website here and here.
