The Promotion and Tenure Guidelines are intended to serve as indicators of the types of activities that can be considered as Exceeding, Meeting or Fails to Meet expectations in the process of making decisions on promotion and tenure. They are not intended to serve as absolutes or fixed elements, all of which must be attained in order to be promoted or to receive tenure. This listing of activities is not all inclusive nor does it represent any number of times any given activity must take place. It is the task of the person seeking promotion and/or tenure to present evidence that activities have taken place and with sufficient frequency and of high enough quality to warrant a positive decision toward tenure or promotion. It is the task of the Departmental Promotion and Tenure Committee (PTC) to assess the information presented, using their best judgment, to determine if the person making application should receive promotion and/or tenure based on the departmental Promotion and Tenure Guidelines.

For promotion from Associate Professor to Full Professor, it is expected that the candidate will be outstanding in two of the three areas being evaluated (scholarship, teaching, and service) and at least be acceptable in the third.
